Lab Experience at CEDIS – Neuroradiology Department at PGXXIII Hospital – Chiara Bettoni

Lab Experience Personal Reflection
Chiara Bettoni, Virgilio 7° Cohort Student, UNIMIB

I had the opportunity to complete my first lab rotation at the “Centro di Eccellenza per la Diagnostica per Immagini del Sistema Nervoso Periferico” (CEDIS) within the Neuroradiology Department at PGXXIII Hospital in Bergamo. This rotation was supervised by Professor Simonetta Gerevini, the Principal Investigator of the lab, who served as my mentor throughout this experience.

The lab specializes in advanced imaging diagnostics of the peripheral nervous system, focusing on conditions affecting the lumbar and brachial plexuses, as well as muscle disorders. Through high-resolution imaging techniques, the lab aims to translate complex findings into actionable insights for clinical practice and research. A key goal is to enhance diagnostic precision while supporting research into both common and rare neuromuscular conditions by consolidating extensive patient records collected over time.

My main project at CEDIS involved developing a comprehensive, adaptable database. This database was designed to integrate nearly 20 years of clinical and diagnostic information that had previously been stored in fragmented formats across various institutions. My role was to transform this repository into a sophisticated, user-friendly tool capable of seamlessly integrating both historical and future patient records in an efficient manner.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the rotation was gaining hands-on experience with MRI data. Analyzing and extracting key insights from thousands of patient images provided me with valuable practical knowledge of the anatomical and pathological features of the peripheral nervous system.

Additionally, the project allowed me to deepen my skills in data management and database design. I focused on organizing, cleaning, and analyzing the details to ensure accuracy and ease of use for clinical and research applications.

In summary, my rotation at CEDIS was an invaluable learning experience that reinforced my commitment to medical research and equipped me with practical skills and theoretical knowledge I will carry forward into my future studies and career.
