Lab Experience at Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori – Viktor Franco Milanesi

Lab Experience Personal reflection

Viktor Franco Milanesi, Virgilio 6° Cohort Student, UNIMIB

I got the opportunity to do my 1st lab rotation at one of the Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori Monza laboratories of Milano Bicocca

PI of the laboratory: Professor Carlo Gambacorti-Passerini

Tutor: Dr. Villa

The lab focuses on the investigation of resistance and mutational landscape in ALK+ tumors.

My experience & learnings:

My lab rotation took place in a high-level research facility dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of ALK+ tumors. This particular laboratory was a hub of innovation, with a singular focus on understanding the mechanisms of resistance within these tumors and the landscape of mutations that drive their growth.

My lab rotation exposed me to a myriad of hands-on experiences. From mastering techniques like cell culture to conducting Western blots, I developed proficiency in fundamental laboratory skills. I also learned the importance of rigorous in vitro testing to evaluate a drug’s efficacy and acquiring profound team cooperation.

What resonated with me during this rotation was the deep impact that research can have on clinical practice. As a future physician, witnessing the potential of developing and testing new drugs stimulated a newfound motivation within me. I understood the true meaning of advancing treatment options for patients with oncological diseases.

My time in the lab led to some intriguing shifts in my career aspirations. It reaffirmed my passion for bridging the gap between scientific discoveries and clinical applications. As a result, I found myself considering new avenues that could allow me to contribute significantly to both fields.

In conclusion, my lab rotation in ALK+ tumor research was truly transformative. It deepened my understanding of how research and clinical activity are interconnected, strengthening my commitment to a career that allows me to drive medical advancements and directly impact patient care. This integration of science and medicine provided me with a unique and enriching experience, one that I will carry with me as I continue my journey as a future physician-scientist.
