Lab Experience at the Laboratory of Pathology, IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori (Monza) – Mauro Mannino

Lab Experience Personal reflection

Mauro Mannino, Virgilio 6° Cohort Student, UNIMIB

I got the opportunity to do my 1st lab rotation at the Laboratory of Pathology, IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori (Monza)

PI of the laboratory: Pagni Fabio

Tutor: L’Imperio Vincenzo

The lab focuses on a variety of pathologies and districts, and I had the opportunity to deepen renal non-neoplastic pathologies, lung and thyroid neoplasia.

My experience & learnings: With the continuous development of Computer Science, Pathology can’t afford to fall behind: during my rotation I could directly experience how Digital Pathology uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to reach beyond the ability and expertise of the human eye. With the guidance of dr. L’Imperio and dr. Cazzaniga, I learned the basics of digital analysis of histological and cytological specimens, arriving to digitally compute the percentage of tumoral cells in lung cancer specimens.

Thanks to this experience, I could appreciate how it’s only through an interdisciplinary approach that Medicine can thrive: I couldn’t be more pleased to have followed my tutors in such an inspiring field.
